Each year, spectators come to the Lake of the Ozarks from all over the country for one of the largest events we have here at the lake, the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. This year, the annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout will take place Saturday, August 26 through Sunday, August 27. With over 100,000 spectators coming to the lake, certain safety measures need to be put in place to help make this a fun, but safe event. In this blog, Deputy and Mizell is here to give you details of the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, tips to avoid getting a BWI, and information regarding BWI defense at the Lake of the Ozarks.
The Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout
The Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat races in the U.S. According to Powerboat Magazine, it was named one of the nation’s 8 “must see boating events.” This year, the Shootout will take place at Captain Ron’s Bar and Grill, located in Sunrise Beach on Lake Road 5-50, mile marker 34.5. The Shootout raises money for 8 lake area rescue teams and numerous other charitable organizations. Last year, 195, 000 dollars went to 34 different charities and fire departments. You can even make a whole week out of it! There are several events leading up to the Shootout, including R/C Mini Powerboats Shootout, golf tournament, treasure hunt, PWC Dam Run, Shootout Strip street party, vendor villages, poker runs, live entertainment and much more.
Boating Safety Tips
With thousands of people making their way to the Lake of the Ozarks for this great event, everyone one must boat safely. Boat accidents do happen and nothing can ruin a fun event more than a tragic boat accident. Please see the following safety tips below, that will help you to know what to do while you are out on the water. Water Patrol will be out and there are certain things they require you to have on your boat.
- Be weather conscious.
- Follow a pre-departure checklist.
- Designate an assistant skipper.
- Let someone know where you are going and how long you will be gone for. (This is referred to as a float plan.)
- Have life jackets on board for every aboard the boat. (Make sure they fit.)
- Have a throwable floatation device on board.
- Have a fire extinguisher on board.
- Make sure your boat is registered and tags can easily be seen by water patrol.
- Consider a free vessel check by the USCG.
- Last but not least, AVOID drinking while boating. If you are the captain, it is extremely important that you remain sober while boating, especially the weekend of the Shootout as the lake will be twice as busy as normal.
